Atlantic Anniversary Race Crew Update #14
Day 8 at sea
Sauber, endlich der angepeilte Südwind.
Nachdem wir uns taktisch während der letzten Tage meistens gen Nord orientiert haben, geht es jetzt stramm Richtung England (go East). Der heutige Morgen erinnerte an einen typischen Nordseemorgen: grau, Nieselregen, schlechte Sicht. Aber zumindest machen wir wieder rasante Fahrt, nachdem es gestern auch sehr flaue Phasen gab.
Einige von euch werden sich eventuell fragen wie wir über 24 Stunden organisiert sind? Nein, wir halten nicht zum Essen oder Schlafen an, wie ich neulich in einer Bar gefragt worden bin. Um unsere HH Linesmen 24/7 auf Trapp zu halten, gibt und gab es schon immer Wachsysteme in der christlichen Seefahrt.
Unser System ist einfach, fair, effizient und hat sich prima eingespielt. Es gibt 2 Teams : Steuerbord Wache (Team 1) mit Hans, Ulf, Jam, Ollie und Stephan und die Backbord Wache (Team 2) mit Andreas, York, Jack, Philip und Thorsten. Am Tage (zwischen 0600 Uhr und 1800 Uhr) machen wir je 6 Stunden und nachts perfomen wir 3×4 Stunden. Somit haben wir 2 Teams in 5 Wachen. Das hat den Vorteil dass die Teams nicht immer zu den gleichen Tageszeiten ran müssen. Jeden zweiten Tag ist ein Team von 1200 Uhr bis 1800 Uhr, und dann wieder von 0200 Uhr bis 0600 Uhr Nachts an Deck.

Today we finally got the southern winds we were waiting for.
After we stuck with our northern course for most of the last days, the wind change allows us to now head straight east towards the UK. This morning already felt like a typical North Sea morning: cold, wet, and bad visibility. But thankfully we are making good headway compared to yesterdays low winds.
Some of you might ask themselves how we have structured our days. That’s right, we do not stop for food or to get some sleep (as I had to explain to someone in Bermuda a few days before the start of the race). So to keep our boat moving we have of course divided the day into shifts.
We have come up with a simple and fair system which has worked out quite well so far. There are two teams: the starboard team and the Portside team. Starboard (Team 1) consists of Hans, Ulf, Jam, Olli and Stephan while Portside (Team 2) consists of Andreas, York, Jack, Philip and Thorsten. During the day (0600 – 1800) the teams do one 6-hour shift each, at night the shifts are a bit shorter at 4 hours each.The 5 shifts over the course of 24 hours lead to some change-up in the daily routine with each team switching back and forth between an early night shift and a late night shift (check out the picture of the schedule for a more detailed view).
This system has proven quite successful so far, no-one has complained and everyone is still in high spirit.
More on that later, but right now I have to go start my shift 😉
