Atlantic Anniversary Race Crew Update #12
Freitag der 13.
Liebe Freunde, liebe Familie und Supporter,
Gestern war Freitag der 13.Juli. In der Nacht vom 12. zum 13. Juli zeigte sich der Nordantlantik von seiner besten
Seite. Das warme Wasser liegt hinter uns und es ist deutlich abgekühlt. Keine Gewittergefahr. Es ist eine sternenklare Nacht. Keine Wolke am Himmel zu sehen. Venus und Jupiter begleiten uns in die Nacht. Der Wind ist moderat mit 20 kn. Der große Wagen und der Polarstern weisen uns den Weg nach Norden. Mit 12 kn Speed kommen wir gut voran.
Es ist Punkt 0:00h als es plötzlich unruhig in der Kajüte wird, das Luk aufgeht und die gesammelte Freiwache an Deck kommt. Es ist mein Geburtstag. Völlig unerwartet werde ich überrascht mit einem Geburtstagskuchen mit Kerze. Ich bin vollkommen platt und happy über eine solche Überraschung. 1000 sm nördlich von Bermuda und 400 sm östlich von Kanada gratulieren mir meine Freunde mit einem Ständchen und einen 3 fachen Hip Hip Hurra. Ich bedanke mich mit einem einfachen Hip Hip Hurra Hurra. Einen klitzekleinen Schluck Rum gibt es auch noch. Was für eine tolle und gelungene Überraschung. Vielen lieben Dank, das war eine große Freude.
Kaum ist die Freiwache wieder in Ihren Kojen verschwunden tauchen Delphine auf und begleiten minutenlang unser Schiff im Sternenlicht. Pfeilschnell tauchen sie direkt neben uns auf, spielen mit unserer Yacht, schlagen schnelle Haken und hinterlassen im Wasser phosphorisierende Spuren. Es geht weiter auf unserem noch weiten Weg nach Hause. Schöner kann ein Geburtstag auf dem Nordatlantik nicht sein.
Vielen Dank liebe Freunde und liebe Crew. Ihr habt mir eine große Freude gemacht.
In der Freiwache lese ich dann noch einen Brief meiner Liebsten, die in der Ferne wie meine Kinder und meine ganze Familie bestimmt an mich denkt und so denke ich an sie.

Dear friends, family, and supporters,
Yesterday was Friday the 13th of July. In the night leading up to it the Atlantic Ocean shows us his best side. We have left the warm waters of the Caribbeans and it has gotten a bit chilly in the last days. The night sky is clear and if you really try you can make out Venus and Jupiter in-between the stars guiding our way east. We have 20 knots of wind and are sailing with a calm 12kts boat speed.
At exactly midnight it suddenly gets a bit busy in the cockpit, the hatch opens and out comes the whole crew. It’s my birthday. Caught completely off-guard, it takes me a minute to realise they are holding a birthday cake in front of me to blow out the candle on it. 1000nm north of Bermuda and 400nm east of Canada my friends congratulate me with a birthday song and three hip-hip-hoorays. After I thank them with a hip-hip-hooray of my own we even share a small sip of celebratory rum. What a great surprise, thank you so much for this!
As soon as everyone off-duty has crawled back into their sleeping bags, dolphins show up to give me a little birthday entourage. Fast as arrows they jump out of the water, play around in the waves off our bow and leave glowing fluorescent trails in the water. We continue gliding through the waves, we still have a long way to go. I can’t imagine a nicer birthday on the North Atlantic.
A big thank you to my friends and crew, it was a great delight starting my birthday like this.
Later once I am off-duty I read a birthday letter from my loved ones who are probably thinking of me from far away, as I am thinking of them from right here in the middle of the ocean.
